My 3 Current Favorite Self-Care Routines.

Hello Lovelies!!

Happy weekend! How are you feeling today? I hope you are feeling relaxed and ready for some self care.

I know I am! It was a long week at work, and I am lucky enough to actually have a 3 day weekend ahead of me! Had a couple of vacation days to use for the year, so I figured I’d give myself the gift of a few spontaneous long weekends. Time for checking a few things off my to do list, regaining control of my mental health/wellbeing and pampering myself a little.

If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you know I put a very large emphasis on self care. As the old saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. And it’s true! I’m sure we can all relate to that at some point.

We all have hobbies, things we enjoy doing, a person or people that bring light into our lives, and SOMETHING that helps to quiet our minds and just make us feel…good.

To me, self-care is the act of pursuing these things simply because it helps to make us feel whole, balanced and relaxed, and not because they are things that we HAVE to do. They are not things on that ominous weekly to-do list. They are the ‘want-to’s’ that help our souls smile and help us find solid ground BEFORE turning our attention back to those ‘have to’s’ in our lives. Self care is so important- it helps us remind OURSELVES that we are worthy of being cared for and of having a sense of calm in our lives. That we are allowed to take a moment. That we deserve to be loved and nurtured. That we deserve to pursue our passions. And finally, it reminds us that the only way we can care for others in the same way, is if we take these moments to check in with ourselves, and make sure we are on the right track.

In honor of the weekend and having self-care on the brain, I figured I’d do a post today on some of my favorite self care routines that I am currently utilizing most of all to ground myself, bring myself some peace and bring myself back to me.

{*Disclaimer- any recommendations I make below are based on my true personal experiences and opinions, I don’t endorse any products, programs, or anything here for any kind of compensation.*}

DIY SPA NIGHT. (This is never NOT going to be a favorite of mine!)

1) Set the mood. This seems silly, but what’s a spa night if not meant to be all kinds of relaxing and rejuvenating? I usually turn on my Saje Essential Oil Diffuser with some of my favorite scents, maybe light a few candles and keep the lights low. Pour yourself a glass of wine, or a cup of tea whatever kind of beverage brings you comforts and sets the mood for relax time.

2) If I plan to incorporate a hot bath or shower during this time, I like to do a body scrub and bring in some fragrant/softening oils. A quick and easy go to of mine if I don’t already have a scrub on hand is a sugar/coconut oil scrub. Salt works too. Use something with an exfoliation that feels good on your skin. Focus on areas of tough skin like elbows and knees. The coconut oil will hydrate, cleanse and protect skin – as well as smelling lovely! I also love melting a bit of coconut oil in the bath before I have a soak 🙂

3) Moisturize!! Especially if you’ve just bathed and scrubbed and soaked, it’s important to replenish your skin with moisture. We’re moving into late fall and almost winter now too, so our skin can definitely use all the help it can get during this transition! When your skin is lightly damp and warm from the water, this is the optimal absorption period for your moisturizer. Slather on your favorite lotion, and take your time with a bit of self-massage into the limbs, and extremities! My body lotion addiction right now for some self-care pampering is a mix of my Eminence Honeydew Body Lotion and the Apricot Body Oil. SO FRUITY AND AMAZING. In a pinch, just slather on some coconut oil! 🙂

4) Cleanse, exfoliate and tone your skin in preparation for PRIME face mask application. I love using my Clear Skin line from Eminence, as well as the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant for a gentle but thorough exfoliation. Once I week I will also do an enzyme peel- natural fruit enzymes gently removing the top layer of build-up and old skin cells, and revealing brighter, fresher skin. Whatever products you are using, make sure they are ones that make you feel indulgent, and are suited perfectly to your skins needs!

5) FASK MASK TIIIIIME. I am a face mask addict, ask anyone- especially my poor girlfriend. This is probably my number one way to relax and feel good. There are so many amazing masks on the market! As always, I advise going as natural/organic as you can in your skin care. Your skin absorbs something like 60% of what we put on it, INTO the deepest layers and cells, and even our blood stream, so make it count! My favorite right now for balancing and clearing my skin is my Eminence Clear Skin Probiotic Masque – rich in cucumber, tea tree oil and lactic acid.

6) RELAX!!! You have just pampered yourself head to toe, and now your face mask needs about 10-20 mins to fully penetrate and benefit the skin. So sit back with your tea, or wine or whatever it is – inhale the sweet scents of your favorite candles and do something that helps you unwind! Maybe it’s reading, watching a movie, or just laying back with your eyes closed. When your masking is complete, wash it off and apply your favorite, most comforting and healing moisturizer. At this point, I generally love to just resume doing whatever relaxing, rejuvenating activities I was doing during my masking, and call it a night.

I’ve been practicing yoga since my late teens on and off, and I am definitely no expert. But that’s the thing I love about it- it’s not about competition, it’s LITERALLY about finding what feels good in your body. It can be a real work out, or also a way to just stretch out and release the day. Whatever my personal intention is for that day, I always feel like I’ve received a good dose of self care after a yoga session! I’m currently going to some hot yoga classes at a local business called Oxygen Yoga, but I also love doing my own at home practice along with my favorite ‘Youtube instructor” Yoga With Adrienne! I highly recommend her videos, for all levels!

I’ve been a big advocate and practitioner of meditation for the last 4 or so years- and if you’ve read much of my blog, you definitely know that this is one of my greatest self-care secrets to what has helped me stay in control of my mind and my mental illness. There are tons of tutorials out there, programs, apps, you name it! Right now, Oprah and Deepak Chopra have just started one of their 21-Day Meditation series. It’s free to sign up, and you receive updates each day with your new 20 minute guided meditation. They speak about inspiring things, teach you mantras, and guide you towards creating your own meditation practice. I am doing this current series to get a jump start back on my own practice – but I have done a few of them before too, and they are always a treat! I also recommend the app “Calm”. It’s full of short, guided meditations that you can do anytime, anywhere, for all levels!

This is pretty self explanatory. Some people find that binge watching shows or movies on Netflix is a waste of valuable time, but if I am ever feeling low energy and blue in my mood, this is one of the greatest comforts to me. I love getting lost in another story and another life for just a little while and allowing my body that rest time. Another way of course that you can do this is reading! And I love to read too! But I love to be visually stimulated and I am a whole hearted Netflix junkie and proud, so what are you gonna do. Some of my favorite go to shows would definitely have to be Breaking Bad – the character development in this show makes me feel like I know them so well, and being in their presence…even the boss of a methamphetamine empire…is comforting. Being Erica – the story of a thirty something who hit rock bottom, and has the opportunity to revisit some of her greatest regrets in life, and see if she would have done anything differently. The lessons in that show resonate with me, and are always inspiring. Portlandia- I love sketch comedy and dry humour, and Fred and Carrie are literally the masters of both. Inside jokes for days.  The most recent go to is also the goofy show Bojack Horseman (thanks to girlfriend for that one). One of the better ‘adult cartoons’ i’ve seen in a long time, this show touches on some pretty dark and real stuff, but is also full of brilliant comedic genius – easy to watch, but also makes you think a bit!!

As for yummy treats….I just love food, period. A doctor recently recommended me to try cleansing my diet of gluten for a few weeks, to see if it helped to clear my skin- so unfortunately this has limited me in SOME ways, but not many. Luckily I am starting to love cooking more and more, so it’s becoming easier for me to through tasty things together. A self care snack could look anything from just a bowl of popcorn (fave FOREVER), to some apple slices and peanut butter, to some tomatoes/basil drizzle in olive oil and salt ‘n pepper, or a charcuterie plate. Listen to your cravings, and don’t deny yourself during self-care time. Don’t judge, don’t deny, don’t enable guilt. If you can make healthier options and you don’t feel like you’re depriving yourself of something, then naturally this is the way to go. But self care is about comfort, so comfort FOODS and snacks are key to have on hand, and guilt is not invited to this party!! Your body is resilient so long as you care for it, and inviting guilt to a self-care day is taking two big steps backwards, I promise you.

Yay! So these are some of the ways I am spending my moment’s of self care currently. Of course, I actually have many, many more. I have  created an endless list of hobbies and self-care techniques over the last couple of years. But right now as I am easing into my new life and new schedule, I like to give myself the time to take care of myself in quiet ways. In ways that don’t necessarily have to turn out a product or be something for anyone else (with the exception of this blog!). I heal best through things that are just for me.

Happy Self-Care Saturday/Sunday everyone! See where it takes you. Enjoy, and take care. xx

Have an inspired day!
